François Demachy
François Demachy is the nose behind Dior's most iconic modern fragrances, including the best-selling Sauvage line.
Born in Cannes in 1949 and raised in Grasse, he trained at the Charabot perfumery school before spending over two decades as Director of Research and Development at Chanel. In 2006 he was appointed Parfumeur-Créateur at Christian Dior, one of the most prestigious in-house roles in the industry, a position he held until retiring in 2021.
His philosophy was that of a craftsman rather than a showman: meticulous, rooted in natural raw materials, and driven by a belief that a perfume's formula should be as beautiful as its scent. His career was the subject of the 2021 documentary Nose, which followed the full circle of fragrance creation from raw material to finished bottle.
